The end of the gardening season – and thank you!
– auf Deutsch lesen – Our gardening year is over. The last bulbs have been planted, the borders mulched with compost. The few unsold roses, trees and shrubs have been tucked away under a blanket of leaves in the shelter of hedges and greenhouses, as have the lovely fruit trees we have already ordered in preparation of the new season. The new peonies and beautiful French Irises have been potted and await the new season in the greenhouse.
The last Christmas trees were sold yesterday, the place tidied. Thanks to the lockdown we have had time to take down the Christmas decorations, pack everything away and do the annual inventory. Never in the 12 year history of the Garden Academy has the place been so tidy and prepared for the new season. Shrubs, perennials, Italian herbs and dahlias have been ordered for February. The seed potatoes are ready for collection upon our return to business at the start of February.
We are glad this long and demanding year is over, and look forward to the winter break, but not before thanking you. Without your support and shared enthusiasm for this marvelous world of plants and gardens, 2020 would have been a miserable year. Instead it has been the perfect garden year. The spring season was stunning: mild temperatures combined with cool nights and gloriously sunny days meant it went on forever. Summer too was kind to us, so that the autumn turned into a glorious riot of colour. The gentle, long spring resulted in a bumper crop of berries and nuts as blossoms lasted a long time, giving insects ample time to pollinate the flowers. Yes it was too dry. The drought was hard on nature, but deep down I am glad the sun was there to keep our spirits up.
We wish you a peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year. May 2021 see you in good health and full of joy! We will meet again in the middle of January.Leave a comment
